Love and after
![]()
The story behind the novel Ma Waraa Al- 'Ishq (Beyond Love), which remained unpublished until very recently, is that for some reason, on finishing it, I wasn't entirely comfortable with the result. So I waited, hoping I would think of changes that would encourage me to go ahead and publish it. I failed to satisfy my critical sense of discretion, however, and finally decided not to publish it, once and for all.
Just as I didn't want to publish it, I never desired to turn it into a film. But a scriptwriter was in the process of adapting another novel of mine for the screen, to be directed in all likelihood by Ali Badrakhan; and some of the scenes in that novel resembled others in Ma Waraa Al-'Ishq, so I gave him the manuscript, for which I had no use, thinking it might help him with the script. I told him he could use scenes from the unpublished novel if he so desired.
That was the last I heard of the novel. I never retrieved the manuscript; nor did I find out if he used it in writing the script. And when I asked him about it, he said he hadn't found it useful. I told him that, since it wasn't helping him, he could tear it up. Had he followed my advice, it wouldn't have been discovered today; nor would critical studies be appearing...
