Sosostris

Pack of Cards

By Madame Sosostris

As you know, my dears, the Cairo Opera House always seeks to promote the arts across Egypt's governorates. This week, the Opera House, headed by Samir Farag, organised a cultural day in cooperation with Minya University, whose president (as you well know) is Maher Mustafa. An original idea was the performance of the most prominent compositions of pianist Omar Khayrat and composer Gamal Salama by Nesma Abdel-Aziz on the percussion instrument called the marimba. This event took place in the Suzanne Mubarak Hall. The programme also comprised a recital of the late Salah Jahin's famous poems by lovely actress Athar El- Hakim, who expressed her great pleasure at participating for the first time in the Opera's cultural activities in Minya. Lovers of opera and classical music were enchanted by the voice of tenor Hassan Kami, who performed excerpts from Aida and Tosca while soprano Hala El- Shabouri sang arias from Carmen and La Bohème, accompanied by the Cairo Opera Orchestra. A song recital by soprano Neveen Allouba accompanied by Manal Mohieddin on the harp completed the classical part of the musical programme.

The recital was followed by a discussion between the political adviser to President Mubarak, Osama El-Baz, and students of Minya University, tackling numerous political and social issues. The cultural day was brought to its conclusion with a medley of old songs presented by the Abdel- Halim Noweira Arabic Music Ensemble, conducted by Salah Ghoubashi.

Abdel- Moneim Kamel
In an attempt to revive popular interest in puppetry, the Cairo Opera House is presenting a new version of Al-Leila Al-Kebira (The Great Night) operetta at the Main Hall from 26 to 30 December. The operetta, directed by Abdel-Moneim Kamel and composed by Gamal Salama, features 60 dancers from the Cairo Opera Ballet Company who perform with huge puppets created especially for the show. Sixteen years ago, Kamel came up with the idea of converting the operetta into a ballet. In this version, some of Al-Leila Al-Kebira's puppets represent humans. The Cairo Opera Orchestra, led by Taha Nagui and Selim Sahab, the National Arabic Music Ensemble and the Opera children's choir participated in creating this masterpiece. The original operetta, written by the late poet Salah Jahin and composed by Sayed Mekkawi, revolved around a group of puppets on the night of the Prophet Mohamed's birthday, and reflected popular Egyptian celebrations of the occasion.

Flautist Inas Abdel-Dayem; Nour El-Sherif
An exceptional music and poetry evening is to be held at the Cairo Opera House's small hall on 29 December. It will include a reading by star actor Nour El-Sherif of Jubran Khalil Jubran and Omar Al- Khayam's greatest verses. (That will be a change, I would say, after playing the role of a polygamous husband in the contentious TV series A'ilat Al-Hajj Metwalli, shown on Egyptian TV and satellite channels in the Arab countries during Ramadan!) The music of Al- Rahbania troupe from Lebanon and great works from Vivaldi, Bach, Monti and Puccini performed by sopranos Caroline Dumas and Iman Mustafa accompanied by the international flautist Inas Abdel-Dayem and violinist Cesar Velev will crown this wonderful evening.

Painting by Gazbia Sirry
Darlings I do hope that you will take all your time to visit the Safar Khan Art Gallery where, starting 8 January, you will be able to admire the work of famous artist painter Gazbia Sirry. Needless to say, our Minister of Culture Farouk Hosny will inaugurate the exhibition.

Christmas bouquet

Another year has flown by and it seems like it only started yesterday. Al-Ahram Weekly and Madame Sosostris wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. As this year is ending on a rather sad note for the global village, I have decided to hang on to all our greeting cards in the hope that some of the wishes will come true and that 2002 will be a peaceful year. But you know me: I could not keep all of them without sharing at least some with you -- hence the display that you can admire on the page this week. I love you all.
