Honouring a legend

Mrs Suzanne Mubarak opened on Friday the Kawkab Al-Sharq (Star of the East) Museum. Located on the Manesterly Palace grounds on the banks of the Nile in Manial, Cairo, the new museum is a state-of-the-arts project celebrating the life and work of the legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthoum (1898--1975).

Mrs Mubarak saw a seven-minute documentary on Umm Kulthoum and toured the various showrooms exhibiting the late singer's rare belongings that depict the stages of her life. Among the items on show were her oud and musical notes, rare recordings, dresses she wore at live concerts and jewellery. Also on display were her diplomatic passport, her identification card, her personal Qur'an, a photo of her brother, Khaled, in Bedouin garb and one of her father, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Dessouqi. A number of letters sent to and from Umm Kulthoum to journalists, artists and government officials were exhibited. One was a letter thanking her for her contribution of LE1,000 to the war effort, another from late Egyptian President Anwar El-Sadat and a third from his wife, Jihan.

The museum also houses a variety of honorary medals the late singer was awarded by President Gamal Abdel- Nasser, King Farouk and King Hussein of Jordan among other dignitaries.

Mrs Suzanne Mubarak was accompanied by Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni on her tour of the museum.
