An evil year
This year is likely to be dominated by the events of 2001, and the war in Afghanista n, which, like an earthquake, shook the world; nothing was as it had been before that date. And like any earthquake the series of tremors will continue. Where these tremors will take place, and how powerful they will be, however, will only become apparent in the next 12 months.
What will be the nature of the developments in question? Will they be restricted to bank accounts or will they involve wars in other parts of the Islamic world? And at what level will change take place? Present demands have gone so far as to include calling for changing school curricula -- a change that would have significantly more far-reaching effects than armed conflicts.
Another extension of 2001 concerns economics: will the international economic crisis continue, and the recession that is afflicting the world's economy, and that has already pushed one country, Argentina, over the brink, deepen? Yet another concerns the unprecedented rise of ethnic and religious extremism. This too is an issue that will take a long time to resolve. 2001 was an evil year that has left behind a great many troubles with which we must live. Perhaps 2002 will bring enough happy tidings to help us live through these troubles.
Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
