Heading for a schoolbook revolution
Mrs Suzanne Mubarak opened on Thursday the 18th Cairo International Children's Book Fair at the Fair Grounds in Nasr City. After listening to a briefing on the contents of this year's exhibition from Culture Minister Farouk Hosni and Head of the General Book Authority Samir Sarhan, Mrs Mubarak toured the various pavilions of the fair, which included works from 49 countries worldwide. Over an area of 25,000 square metres, 271 Egyptian, 122 Arab and 293 foreign publishers displayed close to 1.8 million books.
Mrs Suzanne Mubarak tours Al-Ahram's pavillion at the fair, accompanied by Ali Ghoneim, deputy chairman of Al-Ahram's board of directors and general manager. Ghoneim was representing Ibrahim Nafie, chairman of the board and chief editor of Al-AhramMrs Mubarak told her audience that the production of children's books has gone through a great deal of development in recent years. Last year alone witnessed a qualitative shift in the cultural development of the Egyptian child, through the introduction of a new dimension to our national Reading for All campaign, which is the "Read to your child" initiative. This, she said, is in conformity with the attention currently being given to a very important stage in a child's life -- kindergarten -- which we aim to make part of compulsory education in Egypt.
"The coming stage will witness a real revolution and revival that the Egyptian family will see in the appearance and content of the school book," Mrs Mubarak informed her listeners.
Speaking of media directed to the child and stressing the importance of its role, Mrs Mubarak called on media organisations and cultural agencies to formulate a clear educational vision on the basis of which children's magazines can operate.
"The Cairo International Children's Book Fair has been one of the main channels of our cultural work over the past years. This work is part of a comprehensive plan of action to care for the Egyptian child," Mrs Mubarak said. "This plan of action covers all a child could need in terms of health, psychological, social, educational and cultural care. Our efforts have been extended to include not only the child, but also the mother and her care, the family and its awareness and society and its solidarity for the good of children."
