HAPPY TO HIBERNATE: Fears of global warming can only seem misplaced to this man excavating his car in Beirut. The rest of the country saw two deaths, as cars skittered and crashed on slippery roads. Across the region, and indeed the entire northern hemisphere, an exceptional wave of cold has caused havoc. Rain and a sudden drop in temperature have taken Egypt, too, by surprise: this is the harshest winter in years. The Mediterranean ports of Alexandria and Dekheila were closed for several days because of bad weather; in Cairo, rain brought already sluggish traffic to a grinding halt several times, while at night, the usually bustling city seemed eerily quiet, with inhabitants scurrying home to escape a climate for which we are ill equipped
