Cyrus Vance

Cyrus Vance could seem like a throwback to an earlier, less belligerent age (or at least a time when the US was not alone in throwing its weight around). The former US secretary of state distinguished -- among other things -- for resigning from the Carter administration over a botched attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran is dead, aged 84. I remember him here as a question mark, fragmented by surprise: sharp-featured and determined, wondering, perhaps, where the US's policy can lead it, and the world.
