Recuperation dreams
![]()
Among my new pieces, written under the title Ahlam Fatrat Al- Naqaha (Dreams of the Convalescence Period), I have so far published 65 dreams in Nisf Al-Dunia magazine. They generated much attention in literary circles, the responses varying widely. I am still writing them, adducing new dreams; many have accumulated in my drawers. But I never publish more than two a month, because I don't like to publish anything until a while after it is written. Then I return to it with a fresh and critical eye, modifying, cutting or altogether disqualifying the piece in question.
The most obvious transformation, to me, is that the dreams are becoming closer and closer to reality. Perhaps, like my novels, the dreams too can be classified into "periods": realistic works, intellectual works... Yet I still think they are invariably dreams, however varied their subjects. Their logic is not realistic, and they progress in fits and spurts, like dreams. You might be in one place, for example, and suddenly find yourself in quite another. There may be a Sufi touch to them, yes.
They are not yet complete, though I have heard that they are to be published in book form, shortly.
Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
