France buys Egyptian gas

Last monday, French state company Gaz de France signed a deal to import 3.6 million tonnes of liquified natural gas from Egypt every year for 20 years. The gas will be produced by a consortium of companies, including Gaz de France, Italy's Edison International, Britain's BG, the Egyptian General Petroleum Company and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding company.

The consortium will be known as Egyptian Liquid Natural Gas and hopes to build a gas liquifaction plant at Idku, East of Alexandria. The project will not receive final sanction until the summer after feasibility studies have been completed, reported wires. Production is due to start mid-2005.
