Egyptian to chair WTO committee

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has elected Magdi Farahat, head of Egypt's Geneva-based Commercial Representation Office (CRO), to chair its committee on agriculture.

"The new appointment represents the appreciation by the totality of the membership of Egypt's central and balanced position among the various groupings; and its essential role in forging consensus from the variety of interests and positions," Farahat told Al-Ahram Weekly.

Farahat's one-year term of office will commence at the end of the committee's next meeting in March 2002. The position, Farahat told the Weekly, will entail overseeing the WTO actions linked to the efficient implementation of the Agreement on Agriculture and its associated decisions (signed in 1994 at the end of the Uruguay Round), as well reviewing the members commitments and obligations under the agreement. Farahat will undertake the chairmanship in tandem with his CRO duties.
