A new chapter
Mohamed El-Alfi has taken over as managing director of Special Olympics Egypt (SOE). As a member of the Old Victorian College Association, El-Alfi has vast experience in volunteer work centring on children with special needs and the mentally handicapped. He became even more involved after his children entered Misr Language Schools which offers classes for the handicapped.
El-Alfi
"I started becoming interested in mentally disabled activities after becoming the school's board member," El-Alfi, 57, told Al-Ahram Weekly. "I did not hesitate one second when I was asked to take over SOE."
In his new post, El-Alfi will launch a number of local SOE events which have dwindled over the last few months.
El-Alfi, president of Rotary Club Cairo West, has already formed a SOE soccer team composed not only of the mentally disabled at schools but also students at vocational training centres.
An SOE Middle East/North Africa (MENA) soccer tournament is to take place from 7-13 April in Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt. El-Alfi said EgyptAir agreed to sponsor the Egyptian soccer team by providing 10 free tickets to Jordan and Lebanon.
The SOE has also been invited to attend the 15th Greece International Games taking place from 22-26 April. Egypt won the gold medal in the 1996 Greece International Games in table tennis.
SOE will take part in the Greek event with the same soccer team that will participate in the MENA tournament which will include 13 other countries.
SOE is preparing for a league tournament -- in soccer, basketball, swimming and athletics -- comprising 10 special schools patronised by Mrs Suzanne Mubarak.
