Yasser Arafat

Yasser Arafat's close-up is imprinted on my visual memory in a flash of light -- the eerie glow that surrounded his face, swimming out from the shadows of the presidential headquarters in Ramallah. His captivity is an apt, if vicious, metaphor for the plight of his people: blockaded and bound, rounded up like cattle. Will extermination follow?
