Delivering solidarity
IN AN EMERGENCY meeting held on Sunday, the board of directors of the Egyptian Red Crescent, headed by Mrs Suzanne Mubarak, decided to embark on an extensive fund-raising campaign to collect money for relief aid for the Palestinian victims of the Israeli onslaught in the occupied territories. A sum of LE10 million was earmarked to be delivered immediately, part of which will be channelled through the International Committee of the Red Cross to boost the humanitarian relief efforts of the Palestinian Red Crescent.
Mrs Mubarak had called for the emergency meeting -- attended by honourary head of the Palestinian Red Crescent, Fathi Arafat, and Egyptian ministers who are members of the board of the Egyptian Red Crescent -- to discuss the immediate needs of Palestinians under occupation. Means of removing the obstacles standing in the way of delivering the aid were also discussed.
An extensive fund-raising campaign will be raising more money in the near future for the Palestinian relief effort. Mrs Mubarak called upon all Egyptians to give what they could to ease the suffering of the Palestinians.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian Red Crescent will continue its effort to address international public opinion to reveal Israeli violations of all basic humanitarian principles and to lobby support for a worldwide condemnation of Israeli practices.
On Monday, at a meeting with members of the National Council for Women, Mrs Mubarak called for an immediate cessation of Israeli hostilities, Israel's withdrawal from the territories it occupied and an immediate halt of Israeli violations of human rights and international laws.
The statement issued by the council, condemning Israeli policies and lauding the Palestinian people "for their steadfast resistance in the face of unprecedented humiliation and cruelty," was translated into English and sent to 120 of the most influential non-governmental organisations worldwide, in addition to being posted on the Internet.
