America diminished
![]()
Among the many destructiv e elements of development s in Palestine has been the US position. Its negative ramifications can be felt on the international and regional levels as well as within the US.
On the international level it increasingly appears that America is pitting itself against the rest of the world. And such a state of affairs cannot but undermine the moral authority and the prestige of the state that, by its own estimation, is responsible for giving other states the lead. The differences in opinion between America and even its closest Western allies have served to underline the biased and unethical positions -- based on nothing more than the most cynical electoral interests -- adopted by the former.
On the regional level the weakness Washington has consistently displayed in the face of Israeli pressure has served only to undermine its role as a peace mediator. That Colin Powell's visit to the region ended without his being able to secure even the barest outline of a schedule for withdrawal has simply reinforced the erosion of US authority.
Within America there is growing dissatisfaction with some polls showing that 60 per cent of the American public think it necessary for Israel to withdraw. They have, of course, witnessed their president making this demand only to be met with a blank refusal from Israel.
Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
