Spanish confirmation

JUAN Carlos Ferrero of Spain cruised to a 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory over compatriot Carlos Moya in Sunday's final of the Monte Carlo Masters, confirming he is one of the best clay-court players in the world. Ferrero, right, will be a top challenger to Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten when he aims for a fourth French Open title in just over five weeks. The last two years Ferrero lost to Kuerten in the semi-finals at Roland Garros, the only Grand Slam played on clay.

It was the second-seeded Spaniard's first title since taking the Italian Open, another major clay-court event, nearly a year ago. Before coming to Monte Carlo, he had not won more than two matches in a row this season.

Ferrero, 22, survived a match point in his second- round match against Felix Mantilla but dropped only two sets in the whole tournament.

Monte Carlo is Ferrero's second title in a Masters Series event after the Italian Open. In 2001, he won a total 34 matches on clay, just two fewer than Kuerten.

Moya, left, had been seeking his first major title since capturing the French Open in 1998. His last win in a Masters Series event was at Monte Carlo the same year. He was last a finalist in a major tournament at Indian Wells in 1999.

Kuerten, who was last year's winner at Monte Carlo, missed the tournament because he is recovering from hip surgery performed two months ago.

Ferrero picked up a winner's check worth $372,000.
