Help from Al-Hariri
Ayman abdel-wahab, managing director of the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region of Special Olympics International (SOI), visited Lebanon earlier this month for an on-site inspection of the sports facilities for the 2002 MENA Games in September. Abdel-Wahab also met Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Al-Hariri, under whose auspices the Games will be held. Al-Hariri donated $100,000 to facilitate the hosting of the 19 countries and 400 athletes participating.

SOI also agreed to donate $50,000 to Special Olympics Lebanon (SOL) to help in the organisation. Lebanon was chosen as the venue for this third edition of the Games after hosting the first MENA women's basketball championship in September 2001. The Games will include soccer, basketball, table tennis, swimming and athletics.
"It is a great achievement for SOI to have our third MENA Games held under the auspices of the prime minister," Abdel-Wahab said. "This will make it a great event and the benefits will go to the mentally disabled athletes."
Al-Hariri called on all Lebanese ministries to help make the Games a success and remove all obstacles facing mentally disabled athletes.
