Coordinated solidarity
The courage of the Palestinians in the face of the brutal Israeli assault has won them the admiration and solidarity of Arabs and Muslims throughout the world, and the sympathy of many other groups. Now it is time to build on such feelings, and better channel the ground swell of support.
Solidarity committees should be revivified in every Arab country. They must actively seek to involve political parties, trade unions, and other civil society institutions. And their activities should be coordinated, to which end some body must be created that can oversee the wider strategy and pull together the various acts of support -- demonstrations and public statements, the publication of books and leaflets, the collection of donations, and the provision of medical care to Palestinian victims.
Calls for boycott, and for the halt of normalisation measures, can be similarly coordinated, and Arab regimes should be urged to use all means at their disposal to help the Palestinians in their struggle to establish their own state.
Arab and Muslim communities abroad must also be encouraged to work with like-minded supporters of the Palestinian cause to formulate a viable political strategy and to emphasise the rights of the Palestinians rather than the demands made upon them.
