Enduring absence
![]()
Barely a month ago Ahmed Mazhar called on me unexpectedl y. It seemed urgent -- he only told me he was coming when he was already en route. It transpired that he simply wanted to see me after a long gap; his health has not been good of late, and for a long time I have been largely restricted to home for similar reasons.
In the past we used to meet on a weekly basis. Ahmed Mazhar was one of the so called Harafish, the group of friends whose acquaintance I made in a single evening in 1943. It was in Adel Kamel's house that we first met. And what I immediately noticed about Ahmed Mazhar was his great range of talents. His horsemanship is well- known, and everybody acknowledges his importance as an actor. What people might not know, on the other hand, is that he was a talented qanoun-player and singer and a marvellous painter.
He was also a man of immense courtesy, his manners and moral code refined to the point of great delicacy. May God give us the patience to endure his absence.
Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
