An eye for the neighbours: Whenever we passed the wall of his studio in Ma'rouf, recalls photographer Hamdi Reda, George Bahgory would talk about painting a mural. It would be, he insisted, his gift to the neighbours who had inspired many of his paintings. Yet such were the artist's commitments he never found the time. That is until now. I reminded him recently of his plans for the mural, and of how much he had enjoyed painting something similar at the Asila Festival, in Morocco. The prompting worked: eventually we arrived at the idea of the eye, a popular symbol, which met with the approval of the artist's neighbours. And soon it was mission accomplished.
