London-Taba connection
BRITISH travel agency Peltours is to operate direct weekly excursion flights from London Gatwick to Ras Al-Naqab airport near Taba in Sinai from mid- July. Three trips will be organised in July, bringing 450 British tourists to the Gulf of Aqaba. In August the number of flights will be increased to five, bringing in some 750 travellers. Tourist officials are confident of an increase in bookings in the coming months, and Peltours anticipates a good winter season demand.Peltours was the first international company to operate the London-Taba route and remains the leader in marketing the Taba-Nuweiba region of eastern Sinai, the area most affected by tension in the occupied territories. Minister of Tourism Mamdouh El-Beltagui commented that this area "possesses all the tourist facilities to turn into one of the most important spots for attracting travellers from all over the world".
Peltours head Stewart Louis regards Egypt as the prime Middle East destination for the British market, since it enjoys a moderate climate all year round and a wide range of attractions and activities. "The recent incentive charter flight regulations stipulated by the ministry have encouraged British travel agencies to market Egypt," he says.
MTF doubled space
SIX NEW countries have so far signed up for this year's Mediterranean Travel Fair (MTF) at the Cairo International Conference Centre (CICC): Malaysia, Russia, Spain, Romania, Thailand and Malta. Thirty countries have so far confirmed that they will exhibit at the three-day event, which will be opened by Prime Minister Atef Ebeid on 17 September. Korea, China, Switzerland and Ireland have also expressed an intention to take part. Following this positive response, Reed Travel Exhibitions, which is organising the fair in association with the Egyptian Tourist Authority (ETA), the Egyptian Hotel Association and the Egyptian Association of Travel Agents, has decided to double its stand allocation for this year. This will be the third consecutive year that the exhibition has been held in Cairo. The 2001 fair, which opened only days after 11 September, gave a supportive boost to the industry with fewer than a dozen cancellations.
