ON MONDAY Prime Minister Atef Ebeid unveiled a new statue of Abdel-Moneim Riyad, located in the square to the rear of the Egyptian Museum that carries his name. Born in 1919, Riyad took part in the 1948, 1956 and 1967 wars. A much-decorated lieutenant-genera l, he was killed during the War of Attrition. Riyad, whose funeral drew enormous crowds, continues to be revered as a war hero and a national icon. In celebrating Riyad, Ebeid declared at the unveiling, which coincided with Cairo's national day celebrations, we celebrate not only the Egyptian army but the entire nation.
