THE EIGHTH Cairo International Song Festival opened with the usual sparkle on Tuesday night at the Cairo International Conference Centre in Madinat Nasr. Held under the auspices of Minister of Tourism Mamdouh El-Beltagui and directed this year by Salah Selim, the festival will run until 28 August, showcasing 63 participants from 27 countries.
The highlights of Tuesday's opening ceremony included performances by The National Dance Company of Ireland (Rhythm of the Dance), Spanish flamenco by Antonio Canales, Tango by the Orquestra Filarmonica de Montevideo, the Egyptian operetta Al-Kunouz Insan (Treasures are a Man), with lyrics by Bahaa Jahin and music by Wagih Aziz and Hisham Niyaz, as well as a number of songs by Angham. Four veteran Egyptian singers -- Saad Abdel-Wahab, Hussein El-Sayed, Soad Mohamed and Abdel-Azim Mohamed -- were each awarded the festival's shield.
