Global blockbuster
Curious are the ways of the new international order. Curious how everyone seems to have fallen into line as Washington reshapes the world, steam-rolling it into submission. Everyone acts as if they have been hired as extras in a Hollywood blockbuster. No one is making a fuss and no one is auditioning for the main role.
Consider the cases of both Iraq and Palestine. Since Iraq was subjected to international sanctions more than 11 years ago, each time things have gone wrong in Palestine the screw has been turned on Iraq. The pattern has been developed for more than a decade now, and is being finally honed to perfection. And the trouble brewing in every corner of the Arab world that billows just enough smoke to divert attention from Israel's brutal policies in the occupied territories -- think of South Sudan, Halayib and Somalia -- are all part of a similar pattern.
The secretary general of the Arab League recently warned against Israel's tactics. "Any military action conducted against Iraq with Israel's help or intervention is a very serious matter. Arab countries should not condone such action, for it would have grave consequences for the region and its stability," Amr Moussa said.
Certainly, Israeli threats against Iraq have opened a new range of possibilities. Iraq no longer needs to reject international inspectors to become a target of attack. Israel has never failed to find excuses for attacking its Arab neighbours.
Attempts are underway to rearrange the Arab region, to make it a better place -- for Israel, that is. And meanwhile, when the world isn't playing along, it is playing dead.
