Don't just stand there

By El-Sayed Eleiwa

El-Sayed Eleiwa
The prospects for Iraq could not be more bleak. The United States is not disclosing its military plans, but it will either flatten the country from the air or blow Baghdad to pieces in its attempts to find Saddam. And in doing so Washington is seeking to kill several birds with the same stone. For with this Iraq military extravaganza part two, the current American administration is seeking to finish off what the last Republican administration began 10 years ago. Washington wants to shore up the superpower image of the US, and at the same time sow fear in the hearts of those it has designated as members of the axis of evil and, for good measure, those who might be secretly dreaming of opposing Washington's foreign policy.

The world may go to hell, but at least one country will be pleased. Israel has always wanted to rearrange the region to suit its own purposes. And what is currently happening is certainly a step in this direction. Iraq may end up being partitioned in three, with a Kurdish state in the north, a Shi'ite state in the south, and in the centre a Sunni state. Then it will be Syria's turn, or Sudan's... and on, and on. And what are we doing to stop this madness? Not much, it seems. May I suggest that an Arab summit is in order, together with a summit of non- governmental organisations on the side?

This week's Soapbox speaker is professor of Political Science at the University of Helwan.
