The intellectuals speak

Atiat El-Abnoudy, filmmaker

"I was devastated by the idea that thousands of plans and dreams were destroyed when these people died so suddenly. Now I feel it was a turning point in the lives of all 'third worlders' whose dream was to seek new lives in the US. It's not a valid dream anymore because the US is now a third world country with regards to human rights."

Gamal El-Ghitany, novelist:

"When Mohamed Atta's name was announced on CNN, I became very apprehensive. I remembered the German minister, who said Islam is the new enemy of the West. Now, the world is divided between a conservative ruling system in the US and Bin Laden and his followers. The only hope is that intellectuals all over the world will try to fix things."

Ahmed El-Khamisy, political writer

"If the world showed sympathy and support for America a year ago, today America is feared and hated. After punishing all the Afghani people, the United States now insists upon bombing Iraq and dividing Sudan. The Palestinian people suffer more and more. All these attitudes create a sense of deep worry and uneasiness in the world today."

Tahani El-Gibaly, lawyer:

"The attacks made me feel as if there was a plan to re-divide the world. A year later, I realised that these initial feelings were accurate. Sharon, who is a war criminal by all international measures, is now a man of peace. The Palestinian resistance has become a terrorist movement, and regimes are changed by force."

Beshir El-Siba'i, political writer and critic

"I felt like the taxi driver in Tariq Ali's book, who said his grief was far greater than they have ever felt towards us. He meant the US could not feel sorry for anyone as it doesn't realise that it is the main cause of all other peoples' pain."

Dawoud Abdel-Sayed, filmmaker

"It is impossible that we let thoughts from the middle ages control us. I am not against attacking Al-Qa'eda, but I am against the US crusader war against terror, which is actually about politics and economics. Our weak political and social structures allow the US to pursue this course. All we can do is develop our societies as fast as possible -- progress is our only way out."
