Women unite for peace
Mrs Mubarak is championing an unprecedented initiative for peace, writes Dahlia Hammouda
Saturday, First Lady Suzanne Mubarak is expected to inaugurate a women's peace conference hosted in the coastal Red Sea city of Sharm El-Sheikh.
"Women for Peace" is a two-day conference, convening upon the initiative of the First Lady, and in cooperation with the UN. The conference's objective, organisers say, is to table a vision for the participation of women in international peace-making.
The agenda of the conference includes a long list of issues dealing with peace and women. "The basis for our efforts is UN Security Council resolution 1325, adopted in 2000, to emphasise the role of women in peace-making," one organiser commented.
A plan of action is expected to be adopted to enhance the role of women, women's organisations and peace movements to promote the cause of peace, as well as stress the need for a global effort for conflict management. The need for peace to secure sustainable development will be accentuated.
Since women suffer the harshest consequences of war and armed conflicts, they have the biggest interest in promoting peace. "This is why this conference is really significant," commented one organiser.
The gathering comes as a preparatory meeting for an international conference due to take place next year that would establish a new international women's peace movement. Mrs Mubarak is expected to declare, at the end of the conference, a new international non-governmental movement, "Women for peace." The movement's mandate will be to lobby international public opinion in support of the causes of peace and conflict prevention.
Organisers anticipate the attendance of a few hundred participants at Saturday's Sharm El- conference. A host of eminent personalities, public figures and peace leaders and activists from around the world are expected to be present.
