Celebrating 28

HICHAM al-guerrouj celebrated his 28th birthday by dipping under three minutes 30 seconds for the 28th time in his career in the 1,500 metre IAAF Grand Prix final in Paris. The world record holder clocked 3:29.27 but his celebrations at winning the overall title were overshadowed by Tim Montgomery's unexpected performance. The American broke the world 100 metre record to finish equal on points with Al-Guerrouj but snatched the $100,000 in prize money as overall Grand Prix champion for breaking a world record.

The 400m hurdles final was won by Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic in an impressive 47.62 seconds.

Japan's Koji Murofushi won the hammer final with a monster throw of 81.14m.

Olympic 5,000m champion Gabriella Szabo of Romania came from third to first in the final 30m to win the women's 3,000m in 8:56.29.

Mexico's Ana Guevara, one of four athletes to share the Golden League jackpot this year, won the women's 400m comfortably in 49.90 seconds ahead of Jamaican Lorraine Fenton.
