Bridges of understanding
MRS SUZANNE Mubarak was guest of honour at the International Board of Books for Young People (IBBY) jubilee congress held in Basel, Switzerland this week. IBBY is a non-profit organisation which represents an international network of people from all over the world who are committed to bringing books and children together.
Held under the joint patronage of Mrs Mubarak, Her Majesty Empress Michiko of Japan and Ruth Dreifuss, minister of home affairs of the Swiss Confederation, the meeting was entitled "Children and books -- a worldwide challenge". Four hundred participants from 50 countries came together between 29 September and 3 October to celebrate the 50th anniversary of IBBY.
Mrs Mubarak delivered the keynote speech to the gathering, in which she spoke of Egypt's unique experience in ensuring that the country's children and young people are given access to books of quality. She also expressed her hopes that through reading, children of the world can learn the indispensable values of tolerance and understanding.
After the conference, Mrs Mubarak, Empress Michiko and Ms Dreifuss were given a guided tour of IBBY's children's book exhibition. Two Egyptian books: The Story of the Painter Clown , written by Ihab Shaker, and The Magic Recipe and Her Sisters , written by Amani El-Ashmawi, were honoured by the congress.
