A single beneficiary
I don't know who could possibly benefit from the war against Iraq, a country that has already undergone 10 years of unspeakable destruction. The war is likely to cause turmoil and instability in Arab countries, undermine US interests, and see the United States the subject of even greater public wrath.
By attacking Iraq the United States may secure control of valuable oil resource but it would pay dearly in terms of its commercial and diplomatic interests in the region. The likely loss of American lives is something the US public may not take lightly. The United States is getting ready for legislative elections, and President George W Bush must be thinking of his re- election campaign in two years time. Still, nothing good comes out of military adventurism.
The only possible beneficiary of the chaos resulting from this war is Israel, which has never wanted to see stability in Arab countries. The chaos Sharon's government is creating in the Palestinian territories is something America seems willing to replicate throughout the region. In the past we used to ask America to keep Israel in check. Now we need someone to restrain America.
