Gala dreams
The 26th Cairo International Film Festival (15-25 October) opens this Tuesday with filmmaker Samir Seif's His Excellency the Minister, starring Ahmed Zaki (right). The inaugural ceremony, to be held at the Cairo Opera House Main Hall, also features a gala evening put together by filmmaker Mohamed Khan, the event's high-profile impresario.
The principal focus of this round, according to the festival's new director Cherif El-Shoubashy, concerns providing the cinema of the South with marketplace opportunities, discussion fora and a better chance of confronting and living up to the challenges they are up against.
The official competition features 21 films in total, while an additional 140 films from 42 countries will be screened in the framework of other programmes. Gala evenings on the Pyramids Plateau and at the Citadel, and press conferences by festival guests highlight the festival's engaging programme of activities. Worth mentioning, too, is the celebration of the the veteran Greek director Michael Cacoyannis's 80th birthday. Cacoyannis of Zorba the Greek fame heads the festival's list of guests of honour. His relationship with Cairo dates back to 1953, when his debut, Windfall in Athens, was shot at the Nahas Studio.
