WORLDWIDE PROTESTS: Organisers of the 26 October anti-war rally in Washington DC estimated that more than 100,000 protesters converged on the US capital to demonstrate against the Bush administration's projected war in Iraq. Spokesperson, Teresa Guitierrez, of the Act Now to Stop the War and End Racism (ANSWER) coalition that organised the march lauded the "tremendous international support" for the anti-war movement. On the same day, anti-war protesters marched in Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and South Korea.
In Madrid, tens of thousands demonstrated on 27 October. Previous large-scale demonstrations included the 28 September London march, that drew 350,000 anti-war protesters, the 12 October day of anti-war action in France, which witnessed mass demonstrations in 30 cities. In Japan, 21 October, the country's traditional anti-war day, witnessed militant protests in Tokyo, Osaka, Sendai, Fukuoka and Hiroshima.
