Honouring Said
PALESTINIAN-AMERICAN writer Edward Said and Israeli-Argentinian pianist Daniel Baremboim shared the Concord Award for their efforts in favour of peace. The heir to the Spanish throne, Prince Felipe, gave out the eight Prince of Asturias Prizes on Friday at the Campoamor Theatre of Oviedo, in northern Spain. The annual prizes -- the Spanish-speaking world's equivalent of the Nobel prizes -- include a cash award of $47,080 and a sculpture by Spanish artist Joan Miro.
Upon Said's request the Palestinian flag was placed alongside the American and Israeli flags during the ceremony. In his address he insisted that Palestine is a land of two peoples, one of whom cannot negate or expel the other; instead they should coexist in peace. Said called for greater emphasis on the issue of nationality over identity, explaining how difficult it was for a nation to live without nationality. He also called for more moral support for Palestine from all the lovers of justice.
Other winners this year include American film director Woody Allen and playwright Arthur Miller.
