TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO yesterday Anwar El-Sadat made his "historic journey" to Tel-Aviv in search of peace with Israel. A quarter of a century later, Arab-Israeli peace seems more elusive than ever. Yesterday, Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian teenager in Tulkarem; a day after, clashes had claimed five Palestinian lives in the West Bank city. Also yesterday Amram Mitzna, an ex-general and a relative newcomer to Israeli national politics, was elected leader of the Israeli Labour Party.

Labour are the underdogs in January's general elections, with public opinion polls in Israel favouring Sharon's extremist right-wing government which for the last 22 months has been waging a war of extermination against the Palestinians.

Sadat is pictured flanked by two Labour old guards -- the late Prime Minister Golda Meir and Shimon Peres -- during a state banquet held in his honour.
