A week of women's success
Mrs Suzanne Mubarak hosted an event on Sunday to celebrate the appointment of the first female Egyptian judge. Lawyer Tahani El-Gibali was appointed by presidential decree to the Supreme Constitutional Court on 23 January. "This is truly a historic day," Mrs Mubarak said. "I called for this celebration to tell the Egyptian people that we must be proud of Egyptian women, who have proven themselves in every field of work."
Women have finally managed to become judges, Mrs Mubarak said, after 50 years of constant hard work. "But we still await even more opportunities opening up... Egyptian women have yet to assume such positions as university president and governor," Mrs Mubarak said.
On Monday, Mrs Mubarak presided over a meeting with donor organisations at the National Council for Women's (NCW) headquarters. She thanked the organisations' representatives for their support of the council's work, saying more joint programmes and projects need to be carried out by the various partners in development.
Mrs Mubarak, who heads the NCW, inaugurated a number of new projects at the council, including a certification centre for the collection of data and research on women, a computer lab, a library for resources on women's issues, a centre for developing women's skills and an office for women's complaints.
