Stepping up
AN UNUSUAL perspective of the Step Pyramid in the Saqqara necropolis. Built by the second Pharaoh of the Third Dynasty, Zoser (2654-2635 BC), the Step Pyramid was originally constructed as a one-storey tomb or mastaba. During the Pharaoh's reign the architect greatly increased the base area and built successive steps to form the first pyramid-shaped structure in Egyptian history, forerunner of the Pyramids on the Giza Plateau.
