ZAMALEK'S basketball players defeated Ahli 87-78 in the final to capture their third super league tournament.
Ahli came in second in the tournament which ended earlier this week at Cairo Stadium's indoor complex. Defending champions Gezira finished third followed by Ittihad, the Armed Forces, Aluminium, Sharqia and Tanta.
Zamalek played 40 matches in the super league, losing only six on their way to becoming the only team to win three super league tournaments in a season. They had won the previous events in Cairo, Aswan and Alexandria.
In all, Zamalek have claimed the title 14 times, five less than Gezira which remains the most successful Egyptian club in basketball. Ittihad of Alexandria have 12 trophies and Ahli a mere three.
After receiving the super league trophy, Zamalek's captain Ahmed Abdel-Fatah announced his retirement. Speaking into a court microphone, Abdel-Fatah said it was the ideal time to leave the game.
