APPEARING at many a nightclub, and some purpose-built dance schools like this one in Maadi, the Salsa craze has become one of the more pronounced features of Cairo night life.
Egyptian dancers may not have quite as much skill, or capacity for consuming alcohol, as their Latin American counterparts. But the joy, the sensual energy of the dance is all there; and the sense of liberation, both physical and spiritual, induced by a few impassioned hours of Salsa is increasingly sought out by even the most conservative Egyptians. The expertise of this teacher, shown here with one of his students, bears testimony to the fact that Cairo may be on its way to becoming a Salsa dancing centre of international stature.
