REVOLUTION ANNIVERSARY: Yesterday Egypt marked the 51st anniversary of the 1952 July Revolution led by Gamal Abdel-Nasser. A year later, on 18 June, the Egyptian republic was declared, bringing an end to the Mohamed Ali dynasty that had ruled the country for nearly a century and a half, 80 years of which under British colonial domination. Egypt's first president, Major General Mohamed Naguib (photo right), stayed in power less than a year. He was removed by the Revolution Command Council, led by Abdel-Nasser, following what came to be known as the "March Crisis" in 1954.
