WITH THE US keeping its live artillery aimed at suspected enemies in Iraq it is left to the Arab world to demonstrate the peaceful uses of the cannon. After the sun sets over Cairo a soldier in Darasah signals that the day's fast has ended with a blast from the Ramadan cannon.

Trying not to fire blanks themselves, regional governments will meet in Damascus on Saturday to debate options for greater Arab involvement in Iraq.
