MEN AT PRAYER: One of the many sculpture installations constructed by Ahmed Askalany, on show at the Townhouse Gallery till 3 December. Raised in Qena, Askalany depicts daily life in Upper Egypt using palm fronds, demonstrating how contemporary art can employ local raw material to depict the culture from which it emerges. Art that draws on grass-roots life finds a wide range of expressions during the holy month, with performances and exhibits abounding.
