Horoscopes:

Reap a rich harvest

By Imhotep

People born under the two zodiac signs of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere -- Libra and Scorpio -- are born to reap rich harvests. But while Librans are happy to reap the fruit of another's toil, Scorpios -- forever obsessed with beginnings and endings -- prefer to plant their own seeds.

People born under the Air sign of Libra (23 Sep-23 Oct) are wildly passionate, with warm and generous hearts to match. Personally, I have a soft spot for Librans. My father was one. And many of my best friends and lovers -- my first, great love included -- were similarly Venus-ruled. So was Spanish singer Julio Iglesias and Irish poet T S Elliot -- incurable romantics.

Ancient Egyptians depicted the concept of truth, justice and balance, or Maat, as a beautiful, pubescent girl crowned with a tiara surmounted by an ostrich feather. Libra, the only zodiac sign represented by an inanimate object, should have been represented by Maat because justice is beautiful, especially in the eyes of the wronged.

Librans have an innate sense of fairness and they are good at settling disputes. They are attentive listeners, diplomatic and easygoing -- characteristics that will stand the Scales in good stead in the coming weeks.

On the down side, however, the Scales are sometimes paralysed with indecision. This year they must make up their mind about a certain person by St Valentine's Day.

Librans are instinctively drawn to the affairs of the heart. Ancient Egyptians believed the heart of the deceased was weighed by the jackal-headed Anubis, or Inpu, against Maat's ostrich feather. If the heart was heavy with wicked deeds, it would outweigh the feather. If not, the deceased was welcomed by the Lord of the Underworld, Osiris.

Librans are lascivious creatures. But because they are among the most prudent and conservative human beings, they are discreet about their love affairs. They are prone to idle gossip, but their charm is unfailing.

Librans abhor violence and cruelty, and in this sense animal lover Brigitte Bardot is a representative Scale. Librans are drawn to art and drama and many actresses are Scales. A typical Libran woman is beautiful and sensual -- Sophia Loren, Deborah Kerr and Julie Andrews.

Libran men, too, are dashing. Roger Moore, Charlton Heston, Sting. Even when they are not exceptionally dapper -- take Bob Geldof for example -- they still maintain their appeal.

People born under the Water sign of Scorpio (24 Oct - 23 Nov), due for a financial crash this February, will quickly recover. Some Scorpios are parsimonious, others penny wise and pound foolish. Tight-fisted Scorpios will only reluctantly part with their hard-earned money. Take heart, scorpions, the money is well spent, and you have invested wisely.

Most Scorpios are dead serious -- too earnest, in fact. They have no time for the frivolous or the superfluous. Scorpios are secretive, intense people who are determined to succeed. Intrigued by riddles and mysteries, they make good detectives, as there is nothing they like better than probing to get to the bottom of things. But Scorpios will be preoccupied with eluding some seriously unpleasant people in the first two weeks of February.

Scorpios are hard workers. But if you are a Scorpio, beware of the other Scorpio lurking in the workplace. Try to work together, not against each other. Fearless Scorpios make deadly enemies. And like scorpions, if they lose their venomous tails in a fight, they grow a new one in no time.

People born under the mutable Fire sign of Sagittarius (24 Nov - 23 Dec) thrive on excitement. Variety is the spice of life for these changeable beings. And they shall profit from a change of scene in the weeks ahead.

In spite of your propensity for reckless spending, dear Archers, you should expect a large sum of cash to come your way in the next two weeks.

Like Librans, Sagittarians make charismatic and talented entertainers -- Jimi Hendrix, Maria Callas and Tina Turner, for example. Among the most creative and imaginative people, Sagittarians make excellent authors and politicians -- Mark Twain and the famous wartime British Prime Minister Winston Churchill are two among many.
