The Islamic path to reform

By Abdel-Moneim Abul-Futouh

The concept of comprehensive reform that the Islamic current and the Muslim Brotherhood seek to promote is one that involves the sustainable development of man, state and society. It is based on freedom, which is a right for all. Education should be modern and stimulate creativity, not just memory. Concerning the economy, we need to introduce a fair distribution of income while encouraging the development of human capacities. Not only do we need to create jobs but also a social security safety net. Encouraging small businesses is one way of creating more jobs.

The nation should have strong civic institutions to protect its rights, including syndicates, non-governmental organisations, and a free press. Also, our administrative apparatus will need to be rehabilitated and modernised.

Citizenship is the basis of life in a democratic society. Every citizen is equal to all others, regardless of doctrinal differences. Citizens should choose their government through free and fair elections.

There is only one Islam, and it applies to both men and women. A healthy society is one in which all individuals, regardless of gender, are entitled to act with probity and spontaneity, without tensions, and with no embarrassment or fear of communal contact.

Islam wants women to put their minds and efforts at the service of society. As for their bodies, this is something of no consequence to society and should not even be a subject for debate. Hijab is merely a question of identity and belonging, just as saris are for Indians.

The Muslim Brotherhood engaged in military activities when the country was under occupation. This is a historical fact, but there is no room for its repetition in a country governed by its own citizens, regardless of how divergent they may be in opinions and attitudes.

This week's Soapbox speaker is a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood.
