Summer in the city

Randa Shaath captures hot summer days and nights

The weather is relentlessly hot and humid. And though it is summertime, the living is certainly not easy. The city is expensive, and the influx of tourists, added to the already large population, makes it even more overcrowded. And everyone is out on the streets in search of that elusive cool breeze.

It is a time to re-bond with the city: perhaps with afternoon tea on the Nile, or a barbecued corn-on-the-

cob? Or fishing from an obscure water pipe, eating semeet bought from a street vendor with a piece of cheese and a boiled egg, or enjoying the view from the top of the city's bridges in the wee hours of the morning. And of course the largest pool open to everyone at any time of the day -- the eternal River Nile.
