It means excellent

The mascot for the 2004 Paralympic Games is a sea-horse named Proteas, from a divinity of Greek mythology. The name embraces the idea of excellence that is a premise of the Paralympic Games, as the athletes seek to overcome their disabilities. The Greek word "protos" means first in rank or excellent.

Proteas is expected to be an ideal ambassador of the Athens Paralympic Games and will inspire athletes in this elite sport event.
