One-upmanship

The Palestinian people are doing something rare in this part of the world. They are holding elections with more than one candidate competing for the presidency. Yet the past few days have seen signs of one-upmanship in Palestinian political life, and it has been over inalienable rights.

How can the right of return, the status of refugees, the 1967 borders, Jerusalem and the right to resist become bones of contention in the Palestinian elections? Why surrender rights that the international community recognises and all other nations living under occupation or seeking self-determination enjoy?

The Palestinian elections -- local, legislative and presidential -- have turned into a referendum on principles. And the Palestinians must not abandon any of their principles in making peace with Ariel Sharon's government. Peace and stability can only be achieved through negotiations conducted in line with international norms and legitimacy.

The road to statehood does not involve abandoning principles. The Palestinian leadership must not lower its expectations. Any agreement will be binding on future generations. Decisions taken by the future Palestinian president will determine the fate of a nation.

On 9 January Palestinians will be selecting not only candidates but negotiating agendas. Some of these agendas contradict Palestinian principles, some twist them and some are too inflexible. No one doubts the patriotism of any of the candidates. But when it comes to long-term intentions the picture is less than clear.

Regardless of the result of the elections the Palestinians must preserve national unity. The PA must work in tandem with the Palestinian factions. Democracy must not lead to chaos. The nation must stand united.
