Holiday FAQs

Q: I am a 25-year-old student from the Netherlands. My parents have been married for 25 years and celebrated this with a big party. Instead of receiving gifts for this occasion they planned to take a trip to Egypt, not a romantic two- person trip, but accompanied by their children. To thank my parents, I wish to surprise them with a special gift and I was thinking of taking them out to dinner. So I am looking for a good Egyptian oriental restaurant, but not a tourist trap, where we can enjoy a good meal and perhaps listen to a band later on or at somewhere else in the area. Now I was hoping that somebody could give me some pointers to a good, medium-budget and trendy restaurant in Cairo. We are staying in the Cosmopolitan Hotel, although the restaurant doesn't need to be in the vicinity.

You have several choices for oriental medium-budget restaurants in Cairo. Here are my suggestions: I would say Felfela Restaurant if you are looking for a downtown restaurant near to your hotel (address 15 Hoda Shaarawi Street, tel (+202) 392 2833/2791). There is another wonderful restaurant in Giza called Andrea Maryoutiya which has a special ambiance and atmosphere (address 59-60 Maryoutiya Canal, tel (+202) 385 4441). It has an indoor area as well as a beautiful outdoor area. You can also try Al-Tekkia on 12 Ibn Al- Walid Square in Doqqi (tel (+202) 749 6673), they have another branch in the suburb of Heliopolis on 105 Al-Hegaz Street (tel (+202) 638 4343/644 4157).
