SHARM SUMMIT FOCUS

HUNDREDS of Egyptians demonstrated in universities and at the headquarter of professional unions on Monday and Tuesday shouting anti-Israeli slogans and burning Israeli flags in protest against Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's visit to Egypt.

Not far from the Israeli Embassy, thousands of Cairo University students burnt the Israeli flag, shouting "the blood of martyrs will not be shed in vain."

In statements issued by students, they questioned Sharon's motives. "While committing horrible crimes against the Palestinians, he claims to be a man of peace," one statement read.

The students also called on the attorney-general to issue an arrest warrant against Sharon on charges of killing dozens of Egyptian POWs during Egypt's wars with Israel.

Similar demonstrations were held in Alexandria and Zagazig universities as well as at the Journalists Union.

Sharon was in Sharm El-Sheikh for a landmark summit attended by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan's King Abdullah upon the invitation of President Hosni Mubarak.
