To mark Egyptian Women's Day on 16 March the nation is preparing several governmental and non-governmental activities highlighting the inexorable march of Egyptian women towards equality. Success and failure will be assessed and plans of action adopted to address the many problems Egyptian women still face at home, the work place and elsewhere.
Among the major activities this year is a planned three-day conference organised by the National Women's Council. Under the auspices of Mrs Suzanne Mubarak, the conference, opening Monday, will draft a working plan expected to focus on promoting the role of civil society in supporting women's rights. The agony and aspirations of rural women and children will figure high on the agenda. Upgrading the political participation of women is also expected to receive due attention in view of this year's presidential and legislative elections.
On Tuesday 16 March President Hosni Mubarak will address the conference and is expected to promise the nation's commitment to women's rights in line with the state's code of ethics, values and priorities.
16 March is celebrated in memory of leading Egyptian women who demonstrated against the British occupation in 1919.
