Honouring a commitment
LAST night, at the Cairo headquarters of the Arab League, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak was named the leading Arab first lady of 2005. The award was granted in recognition of Mrs Mubarak's dedication to promoting peace and cross-cultural understanding.
The Arab League and the United Arab Emirates-based Centre for the Participation of Arab Women launched the Leading First Arab Lady Decoration last year; its inaugural recipient was the wife of the late Sheikh Zayed, the former president of the United Arab Emirates.
Several other Arab women were recognised at yesterday's event for their support of social development and cultural awareness in their countries. On the list were Aisha Muammar Al-Qaddafi of Libya, Suad Al-Sabbah of Kuwait and Bothayna Shaaban of Syria.
