PLANTING PEACE
The Suzanne Mubarak International Movement for Women and Peace (SMIMWP) is launching two new projects promoting a culture of peace amongst children, reports Reem Nafie.
A series of children's summer camps will be established by SMIMWP in various coastal cities; the camps will focus their activities on promoting principles of peace, friendship, and respect for others. Mrs Mubarak called on the nation's parents to encourage their children to benefit from the summer vacation; by engraining peace culture concepts via the activities they take part in during their free time.
The second project will provide Egyptian children with opportunities to mingle with children from other countries, via their embassies in Egypt. The events will involve respective displays of cultural exchange, and will culminate with a "Day for the Egyptian Child" highlighting uniquely Egyptian concepts.
Also this week, Mrs Mubarak planted the first tree in what has been termed "Cairo's Green Belt" -- an ambitious project meant to surround the over- crowded capital with trees as part of a larger scheme to plant at least one million trees nationwide. The planting ceremony took place on Tuesday in commemoration of World Environment Day.
